What AL Homeowners Can Expect During a Duct Cleaning

Before we head into Summer, it’s important that Alabama homeowners keep up with the routine maintenance needed to ensure that their AC unit stays in shape. Unfortunately, AC units in the South have their work cut out for them.
Not only do they have to provide cool air, but they have to work against the intense heat and humidity of the Southeast. Luckily, routine maintenance like duct cleanings can help lighten the load for your AC unit. Duct cleanings not only improve efficiency, but they save you time and money.
For first-time homeowners, (or those who haven’t had their ducts cleaned in a while,) the process may be unfamiliar to you. Well, here’s a guide that outlines the process from start to finish. Here’s what to expect from a typical duct cleaning:
Step #1: Assessing the Home’s Needs
First, the HVAC technician will conduct a quick assessment of the home. They will look at the home’s supply and return registers to determine how much debris is built up within the home. (Debris can be considered dust, fallen items, dirt, pet dander, etc.) Ducts will also be checked for damage and leaks, which can reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system.
Step #2: Hooking Up the Hoses for Duct Cleaning
Next, the technician will set up their vacuum before they start cleaning. Air ducts are cleaned either one of two ways: with truck-mounted equipment or a portable vacuum.
The truck-mounted vacuum is the preferred method of cleaning, as it has lots of suction power and removes debris in hard-to-reach places. This type of vacuum has a large hose that is hooked up to the main trunk line, which is typically located in a home’s basement or attic. Technicians will require access to the area.
Portable vacuums are also used, but not as much. These types of vacuums tend to be less effective than truck-mounted ones. However, portable vacuums allow for better access in areas that are difficult to reach, requiring them to be used in certain circumstances.
Step #3: Cleaning the Ducts
Air ducts are cleaned using a vacuum. During this process, the technician will help dislodge debris and direct it towards the vacuum. This debris is moved using air compressors, which have different head attachments to move debris in the desired direction. For debris that is hard to remove, octopus whips may be used.
During the process, technicians will clean the home’s vents, registers and the HVAC system’s trunk lines. Sometimes, disinfectants are used to prevent mold and bacteria growth in the ductwork. To clean the entire system thoroughly, technicians will require access to most of the rooms within your home.
Step #3: Following the Cleaning
Technicians will clean up loose dirt, replace dirty air filters and pack up their gear. Additionally, they will patch any holes that were created to reach trapped debris.
How Long Does It Take To Clean Your Ducts?
The process can take around 4 to 6 hours, but it ultimately depends on the size of the house and how easy it is to remove debris. For example, a large, two-story home with lots of nooks and crannies will take longer to clean than a small, single-story home with simpler ductwork.
Why Is Cleaning Your Ductwork Important?
If debris is left to build in your ductwork, a whole host of problems can occur. These include:
- Reduced efficiency in your HVAC system
- Higher energy bills since your HVAC system has to work harder
- Allergies can worsen for those sensitive to mold and dust
- Mold growth can happen if debris is left unchecked
- Pest infestation can occur in built-up debris
- Potential fire hazards can develop if debris continues to accumulate
