When Is It Time To Replace Your Ductwork?

While our ductwork tends to go unnoticed, its value shouldn’t be understated. Ducts are an essential part of an HVAC system’s function, as they funnel fresh, clean air into our homes. They not only impact our quality of life, but take loads of pressure off our HVAC systems (and our wallets.)
While good ductwork can last anywhere from 15 to 25 years, it will eventually start to show signs of wear and tear. And when your ducts start to deteriorate, you’ll not only feel it but your HVAC system will as well. So, how do you know when it’s time to replace your old ductwork? Here are a couple of signs to be on the lookout for:
Poor Airflow
Since ducts are responsible for the transport of air from the HVAC system to our rooms, poor airflow is a strong indicator that there’s a breakdown in the process, and likely something wrong with your ducts. Here are some signs of poor airflow:
- Air is struggling to come through your vents
- Vents blow warm air when the thermostat is set low
- Rooms feel stuffy, humid
- Whistling or rattling noises coming from your vent
Increase in Energy Bills
If there’s a noticeable increase in your energy bill, it’s likely there’s an issue with your ductwork. One of the main functions of ductwork is to improve efficiency with airflow. If airflow is not optimal, your AC will work harder to compensate. The harder your AC works, the more you spend each month on utility bills.
Excessive Dust and Debris
If you're cleaning out your vents on a regular basis, but still notice dust and debris accumulating, it could be a sign that your ductwork needs replacement. Our bodies can also tell us when there’s too much dust in the air.
Some people are allergic to dust, and when there’s a lot of buildup, their allergies get noticeably worse. Symptoms include:
- Runny nose
- Coughing or wheezing
- Sneezing
- Itchy, swollen or watery eyes
Visible Signs of Damage to Ductwork
Visibly damaged ductwork is a strong sign that your ductwork needs to be replaced. Additionally, if you’re not sure how old your ductwork is, visible damage is an easy way to tell that replacement is needed soon.
This looks like:
- Tears
- Holes
- Cracking
- Loose, hanging or disconnected ducts
- Mold or mildew (while there can be several factors contributing to mold in your ductwork, its presence can also indicate that it’s time to replace your ductwork)
Damaged ducts not only reduce HVAC efficiency, but they can also become ways for pests to travel throughout your home. Cracks, holes or tears are enough for pests to get into your HVAC system, allowing easy access for insects and rodents. If you notice any pests taking up in your ducts, it’s a clear sign that your ductwork needs immediate attention.
How is Ductwork Installed?
An HVAC technician will inspect your current ducts, and develop a plan for installation. On the day of installation, old ducts will be removed and discarded. The new ducts (specially designed for your home) will be installed. Once the technicians are done, tests will be done to make sure that the new ducts are working correctly.
How Long Does It Take To Install Ductwork?
It can take about one to four days to install ductwork. The time taken to complete an installation depends on several factors including the complexity of the design, the size of the home and if any upgrades are being done.
What Happens After Ductwork Is Installed?
Following duct installation, routine maintenance is required to keep your home’s ductwork running efficiently. Replacing your air vents, scheduling regular duct cleanings and routine inspections will help extend the life of your newly installed ductwork.
